The Jabiru Town Council undertakes most normal Council functions (eg water, waste management, road maintenance, town planning functions, library service provision). However, it is unique as the Council operates under a special Town Authority Act, being within an National Park on Aboriginal Land. Some of its functions are therefore more limited than those performed by other Councils. On the other hand, as Jabiru is remote, some Town Council functions extend beyond those normally performed by local councils.
